100 Book Challenge and Logs
I encourage the parents to read with their child EVERY night. Please see the "students" tab for more information.
Parent Involvement Nights
As a teacher in a Title 1 school, I have helped the reading specialists at the Parent Involvement Nights. The reading specialists organize a night where parents and students come back to school for literacy related activities. They have had storytellers, authors, magicians, and many others come to these events. This is a great opportunity for parents and their children to spend time together. After the show or presentation, the teachers work with the kids on various activities related to the show, while the reading specialist speak with the parents. They give them books, tips and other resources on how to better help their child at home. The most important is the night in June! The reading specialists give the parents great ideas and the students great incentives to keep reading over summer break! It is a wonderful night for all!
Connecting with the Local Library
My colleagues and I work with the local library to help get all of the students library cards. We send home applications with everyone and then take the completed ones to the library. The students love visiting our school library and get very excited when they find out they can visit the local library as much as possible. The librarian keeps us informed of any events going on and we pass along all of the information to the students and parents. The librarian even makes a visit to our classrooms to introduce herself to the students!
